Thank you, Sam.
You're so right.
And it's so hard to not be just like them when you're in their company. Even the act of "fighting" their arrogance leads to a kind of arrogance of our own.

There is a prayer I learned recently:

"Lord and Master of my life, take away from me the spirit of laziness,
idle curiosity, love of power and vain talk.
But grant me, Your servant, the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love.
Yes, Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not judge my brother or sister.
For you are blessed forever and ever.
Amen."

No accident that the prayer came to me just as I finished the article.

Wow, what a concept, " to huddle around one's own humility". This is akin to huddling around one's own charity or acts of kindness. The root of this type of self promotion is actually arrogance. There seems to be preconscious awareness in those individuals displaying these traits to the distastefulness of the practise.

It is the abandonment of ego and self interest that leades to righteousness in just about all spiritual paths. It is impossible to grow in the fullness of the spirit of the Lord if you are full of yourself. The evidence of rightiouness is in the lack of posession of anything but spirit & love for the Lord & his creation.
